The previously leaked Sony Xperia Z was finally announced today at CES and it it’s certainly an impressive unit. The Xperia Z is Sony’s 2013 flagship device and its specs are certainly strong enough to hold them up for the entire year, at least it looks that way on paper, we’ll see about real-world use.
- 5-inch 1080p Reality Display
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean w/ Skin (4.2 updated at a later date)
- Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core CPU @ 1.5GHz
- 13MP Exmor RS Rear Camera
- 2GB RAM, unknown expandable memory.
- Dust and water resistant (IP55 & IP57)
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- 2330mAh Battery
- 7.9mm Thickness
With its dust protection and water resistant body, the device can be submerged in water for 30 minutes without sustaining damage. Battery life from the 2330mAh battery is extended through the use of Battery STAMINA Mode which closes applications when the phone goes into sleep mode, and then re-opens them when you use the device again. No idea how this is going to affect multitasking, but we’ll soon find out.
The Xperia Z and ZL — a smaller form-factor of the same device — will be launching in Q1 2013 globally with each variant going to specific areas that weren’t announced. Pricing is also a mystery, though it will change region to region.
