Not having the ability to pinch and zoom on the Xperia X10 wasn’t a real killer in the beginning, just a major annoyance. There was massive outrage at Sony Ericsson for not including such a basic feature to begin with and only now have they decided to incorporate it because of its use in applications on the Android 2.1 platform. We were told at the launch of the Xperia X10 that MT (Multi Touch) was never coming and that it just wasn’t possible, evidently they lied. According to their blog, Sony Ericsson Engineers have reconfigured the touch panel driver to allow some Multi Touch gestures such as pinch to zoom, which leads us to believe that the X10 is only Dual Touch capable, the same deal with the Nexus One, HTC Desire, etc..
Sony Ericsson state that it’s not a perfect implementation, as the touch panel will start reading the touches wrong if you cross the x & y intercepts, once again this happens on the two devices above. We’re told there’s an update coming in Q1 2011, which I’m sure we’re all looking at thinking that there’s no way in hell they can keep to a deadline, we’ll see. There is nothing said about what could be in the update except for MT capabilities. Maybe Gingerbread? Good joke, surely. Hit the break to check out a video of some hardcore pinch to zoom happening on the Xperia X10.
Note that the video is taken using another Xperia X10, not too shabby.
