Plans for a more YouTube focused music service from Google isn’t really new, but it’s getting more detailed with a report by Droid Life outlining what will happen with the new service including what will happen with Google Play Music.
Google has previously confirmed there is a service coming, with YouTube’s global head of music Lyor Cohen confirming it was coming at the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) festival earlier this year. While Google weren’t ready to unveil YouTube Music Remix at SXSW, it is coming, and it means the end of Google Play Music according to the report, with users of the Google Play Music transitioned over to YouTube Remix by the end of this year.
YouTube Music will be heavily focused on content discovery, with Google Play Music features such as recommendations, smarter playlists, and music recommendations based on the time of day, your location and more being included in the service.
In response to the report, Google reached out to Droid Life to provide this statement:
We’ve previously announced the combination of the YouTube Music and Google Play product teams — music is very important to Google so it’s critical we have one offering that meets the needs of consumers and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.
It seems that YouTube Music Remix is definitely coming but the questions of when it will be announced? How much it will cost? Will it be available in Australia? Will it still include YouTube Red are yet to be answered. A number of people have also asked the question of whether Google Play Music’s awesome music locker feature, which lets you upload 50,000 of your own tracks to the cloud, will be coming along for the ride as well.
