Samsung has now formally announced an(other) addition to its already fairly crowded tablet range with the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite. In a range where there’s already a Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, the addition of another 7″ tablet seems just a little unusual.
This, especially when you consider the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 was hardly remarkable — it featured a dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 8 or 16 GB internal storage, uninspiring cameras even for a tablet — but it was saved by a fairly large battery capacity of 4,000 mAh.
The newly announced Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is somewhat less remarkable than this. The same 1.2 GHz CPU is back, this time with a lower resolution screen (1024×600), just 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and a 3,600 mAh battery, no front facing camera, and just a 2 MP camera on the rear.
While the Tab 3 Lite will be available in 3G and Wi-Fi variants, in black and white, they will launch with Android 4.2 (rather outdated now). There’s no announcement on pricing or availability, or even a launch date, but one wonders why Samsung has decided to go down this path. The low-end tablet market is seriously crowded with mediocre devices, and this is smack-bang in the middle of mediocre.
