A long time ago in a country very very close a pay-TV provider and Netflix didn’t get along. Now though, they’re best of friends with Foxtel recently adding a Netflix app on their IQ3/IQ4 boxes, and now the launch of Netflix on Foxtel Now hardware – a long, long, long (long, long, long, long) overdue addition.
Not only is Foxtel finally allowing the NetFlix app onto their Android TV-powered streaming set-top box, resolving our major complaint against the box when we reviewed it in 2017 they’ve also released new hardware with a dedicated Netflix button.
New customers can buy the updated version of the Android TV-powered Foxtel Now Box (that will include the Netflix app and a new remote) for $99. Existing customers will soon (next few weeks) get an over-the-air download of the Netflix app.
Overall this is great for consumers who choose to use Foxtel’s streaming service as the new Foxtel Now Box offers an almost-all-in-one solution for online entertainment. Remember, the Foxtel Now Box also includes an antenna input so you can watch free-to-air broadcast TV without switching inputs. If you’re a Foxtel Now subscriber, perhaps this is the Set-top box you’ve been waiting for – I have to admit it’s now seriously piqued my interest.
The Foxtel Now Box retails for AUD$99 from Foxtel, via Foxtel’s eBay store or from JB Hi-Fi, Kogan, Betta Electronics, Officeworks, Harvey Norman and David Jones.
A word of warning, though: if you’re not a Foxtel Now customer, this might not be the Android TV device for you – the UI is customised for the Foxtel Now service heavily geared towards Foxtel’s content, and you will need to sign into a Foxtel Now account during setup.
