After launching its TenPlay catch-up TV service last year on the web and iOS, Network Ten has finally brought us an Android app. You’ll be able to watch shows like Elementary, Neighbours, 90210 and Ten’s news and live sporting events in the app as of today.

The app features on-demand streams of TV shows that have aired on the Ten, Eleven and One channels and can also stream live news and events (like yesterday’s F1 race). You’ll also find a fairly well-featured TV guide included, which covers not just Ten’s own channels but also other free-to-air and pay TV channels – a nice touch.

Despite aping the iOS app’s user interface, TenPlay delivers a pleasant and responsive user experience. Even so, we’d like to see a little more adherence to Android’s UI design guidelines.

Tablet version forthcoming

Ten is promising a tablet-specific version of the app will be available later this month — until then it can be sideloaded via a service like APK Downloader (it’s called au.com.tenplay). It’s worked well on the devices we’ve sideloaded it to.

Unfortunately there’s no Chromecast support to speak of, but with Google’s media streaming device yet to launch on Australian shores this isn’t too surprising. With the international launches ramping up, we’re pretty sure it’ll be coming soon. We’ll be keeping an eye on TenPlay to see if it gets added.
