HMD has unveiled a new “Family” division at MWC 2025, aiming to address the growing global mental health and safety crisis among children related to smartphone use. The company’s launch is driven by a new report revealing that over half of children aged 8-12 believe they suffer from phone addiction.
The flagship product of this new line is the HMD Fusion X1, a “first smartphone for teens” developed in partnership with Xplora. This device prioritises parental control, offering features like restricted social media and internet access, location tracking, and emergency SOS, all managed through the Xplora app. HMD’s research, surveying 25,000 children and parents, found that a significant number of children are contacted by strangers online, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures.
“Smartphones aren’t just tech — they shape childhoods, family dynamics, and society itself,” said Lars Silberbauer, CMO at HMD. “We are working with parents to do exactly that.”
In addition to the Fusion X1, HMD announced a partnership with SafeToNet to integrate AI-powered protection against harmful content directly into its devices, launching this summer. This will automatically detect and block harmful content before it reaches the user.
HMD also expanded its feature phone portfolio with the HMD 130, 150 Music, and 2660 Flip, catering to those seeking simpler, more durable devices. These feature phones are designed with strong audio capabilities and long battery life.
Adding to its audio offerings, HMD unveiled the Amped Buds, the world’s first wireless earbuds with a charging case that can wirelessly charge compatible smartphones. Featuring Active Noise Cancellation and Environmental Noise Cancellation for clear calls, the Amped Buds are available in multiple colours.
“Our first year creating devices under the Human Mobile Devices brand has been full of highlights,” said Jean-Francois Baril, CEO and Chairman of HMD. “With this renewed focus on human experiences, a new focus on the family segment and a continued focus on security and financing, HMD looks forward to meaningful growth in 2025.”
The HMD Fusion X1 is slated for release in Australia in the first half of 2025, with the Amped Buds following later in the year. Pricing and specific launch dates will be announced closer to availability.
