The OnePlus 2 will launch on August 11 in the US, Canada, India, European Union and China with a launch in South East Asia to follow in Q4. The 64GB model will go for US$389 (AU$532) and a 16GB model for US$329 (AU$450).
OnePlus’ now-familiar invite system will be in play, though the company says it’s been revamped a little for 2015. Head over to OnePlus’ invites page to find out more.
The company hosted a VR launch event that was fairly unique, though the experience was marred by poor stream quality and a crashing app for some people – including several members of the Ausdroid team. It was a prerecorded video that started with a walk around OnePlus’ offices, talking about the great community that OnePlus has garnered with the OnePlus One, complete with inspirational music before moving on to the OnePlus 2.
Not many specs were unknown about the OnePlus 2, but a few more were revealed in the presentation. We also got confirmation that this mornings photos were indeed the real deal.
The specs?
- Snapdragon 810
- 4GB RAM
- 64GB Storage
- 5.5” 1080P
- 3300mAh battery
- 13MP Camera with OIS, Laser focus, 1.3um
- Dual 4G SIMs
Note: There are still rumours that the 16GB model will come with 3GB of RAM, but we’re waiting for OnePlus to officially confirm specs.
The OnePlus 2 will come with a physical alert slider on the side of the phone, similar to the Palm Treo from days of yore, which allows you to control volume or alerts easily using the Lollipop notification system of Full, Priority or Mute all.
The OnePlus 2 will also feature a fingerprint scanner with support for up to 5 unique fingerprints. OnePlus assures us that the reader will be fast and accurate, but will of course bear further investigation.
The camera is much improved, though Carl Pei has recently tweeted that it will improve over the next 6-8 weeks, but they believe it to be a great quality camera. The camera features a 13MP sensor with 1.3 micron pixels. The camera features OIS makes to photos clearer and Laser focus to ensure fast, in-focus shots in 0.3 seconds to ensure you never miss a moment.
Accessory wise, OnePlus has brought back the Style Swap covers. They will be offering four variations of Style Swap cover as an aftermarket accessory in Bamboo, Black Apricot, Rosewood, and Kevlar. Also on the accessory list, but included in the box is a USB-C charging cable which features a reversible USB cable on the other end to make plugging it into your computer a single step process.
Still missing? The important part for us – supported 4G bands. That’s important because the OnePlus 2 isn’t heading to our shores for launch so you’ll likely need to secure an invite and go through a freight forwarder in much the same way a number of users got their hands on the OnePlus One.
The company also says it’s planning pop-up stores in 9 cities around the world – you can RSVP for six of these events (New York City, San Francisco, London, Milan, Berlin and Paris) at attending.io/oneplus.
There’ a pricing list announced for all the markets the phone will launch in if you’re going to be in one of those countries once the phone is announced.
There’s a nice slick video showing off the specs:
