The magic egg laying bunny will soon be gracing homes around the world, and Big W has launched a new competition to tie-in with it. It’s a pretty cool idea, using smartphones and beacon technology to guide you around the store collecting virtual eggs for a chance to win prizes.

The app itself is fairly straight-forward, open it up when you hit a Big W store and you’re given clues to find the virtual eggs, a hot/cold meter keeps you fairly on-track meaning it’s even possible for younger players to give it a go. Every time you find an egg you enter the draw to win a prize – find all five eggs in a store and you could win a new Hyundai ix35 SE. The prize pool outside of the car is fairly large, with a total value of AU$36,125. Prizes on offer include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Giant 10kg block of Cadbury Chocolate
  • Wildly entertaining Fox family favourite movies
  • Exciting Coleman camping gear for the whole family
  • Super fun Pixar or Disney Bed Frames and movies to enjoy
  • Wii U Console to play or the new Yoshi Amiibo figure

The Hot/Cold function is a fairly interesting one, which utilises Bluetooth Beacons located around the store to determine a persons proximity to the ‘egg’. Initially an Apple technology, iBeacons are now more commonly referred to as Beacons as they’re used more and more outside the Apple infrastructure. A recent example is the Sydney Opera House educational tours they announced in partnership with Samsung, which uses beacon technology to lead students on a tour of the Opera House bringing up relevant information when students approach a specific location.

It’s a fun game for the kids to have a go with while you shop, and you could win a prize. As always, check out the terms and conditions before you play. If you’re ready to play though, head on over to Google Play and grab the app.
