Edit: This story has been updated to reflect that Telstra is the provider for Aldi Mobile and not Vodafone.

After the demise of ISPOne back in 2013, Aldi Mobile was able to work out a deal with Telstra to continue service for their customers. The service has been 3G only since they launched, but Aldi themselves have started talking about the upgrade to 4G with the service set to be ready by May.

The announcement of Aldi Mobiles 4G migration comes from the Aldi Mobile website which is talking about the current 3G service being migrated to 4G service over the next 4 weeks. Aldi has seemingly made the announcement after they announced that they will be gradually upgrading customers who may note over the next 4 weeks, if their handset is 4G enabled, that they can now access 4G service.

Telstra operates 4G services mainly on the Band 28 (700MHz) as well as Band 3 (1800MHz) networks in Australia, with some services operating on 2100 and 900MHz services, so if you’re an Aldi Mobile customer you will need to either have a phone that supports those bands.

The migration to 4G will be completed by the end of April, however there is no way for Aldi to give updates to individual customers, so unfortunately you can’t ask. Aldi recommends if you do have a 4G enabled phone, that you turn on the 4G setting on your handset, which on Android, should be in Settings > More > Mobile Networks > ‘Preferred Network Type’.

Aldi Mobile has previously sold 4G enabled handsets at competitive pricing through their bi-weekly ‘Special Buys’ which support at least one of the bands on the Telstra 4G network. While their Special Buys haven’t been updated with any more 4G enabled phones yet, it’s likely that as the service launches officially next month we will be seeing something in the Special Buys when the migration has been completed.
