We reached out to Google Australia earlier today asking if there was any chance of the Google Play gift cards that launched today would ever find their way to Australian stores. It turns out that there may well be a chance of that happening in the future with Google Aus stating:
“…we want to give users in other counties more ways to pay in Google Play and want to sell gift cards outside the US eventually. But, we don’t have anything to share about Australia at this time.”
This is great news, and we don’t see why it wouldn’t happen. iTunes gift cards are always being snapped up — especially when on discounted sale — by consumers in physical stores. Then again, iTunes gift cards can go towards more than just eBooks, Movies and Apps, which is all Google Play allows in Australia. Music sales aren’t yet available on Google Play here in Australia with no official announcement from Google on when, or if, that service will launch here.
Possible retailers for the gift cards could very well be the same ones as in the US: Target and EB Games (GameStop), with the possibility of JB Hi-Fi jumping on board as well — though that’s all pure speculation on our part.
Would you be interested in Google Play gift cards launching here in Australia? They seem like a viable gift for fellow Android users.
