At this time of year with Christmas rapidly approaching we are starting to see a large number of pre-paid phone deals that can be left under the tree, most of these are generally low spec Gingerbread based phones, however in the latest Woolworths catalogue which goes on-sale today they are advertising the Huawei Ascend Y201 for $79 which is actually running Ice Cream Sandwich making this one of the cheapest phones we’ve seen running ICS so far.

Huawei Ascend Y201 Specs :

  • 3.5” 320×480 Capacative touch-screen
  • 800MHz Qualcomm CPU
  • 4GB Storage(2.5GB User accessible) with microSD Card Slot
  • 3.2MP autofocus BSI Rear Camera
  • Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • 1400mAh Li-ion Battery
  • 116.9×60.4×11.7mm @ 130grams

The phone is advertised as a Telstra model and is Blue-Tick compliant for enhanced coverage and is presumably locked to that network and the catalogue terms and conditions state that a Network unlocking fee applies. There is a limit of 1 per customer with no trade sales allowed. The sale is while stocks last or until the 4th of December. It’s nothing to rave about in terms of specs but it is great to see Ice Cream Sandwich on such a cheap device. If you are on the lookout for something cheap to use as a pre-paid phone then this may be a pretty decent option.
