Without doubt one of the biggest success stories for Android in the tablet arena over the past 2 years has been the Nexus 7. With sales approaching 4.6 Million units shipped worldwide, since its release in June last year, the tablet has gained mainstream success where other manufacturers have seemingly failed.
Leading into Google I/O earlier this month, a refreshed Nexus 7 was rumoured to be released at the keynote address on Day 1, however this failed to materialise and many were disappointed when Google failed to announce any new hardware at the developers conference.
In a report by Digitimes, a source has advised that AU Optronics (AUO) has been commissioned by Google and Asus to produce a 7-inch low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) panel for the refreshed release of the Nexus 7. When questioned about the statement, AUO advised – in no surprise to anyone – that the company does not comment on any particular customers and orders.
The extended hope of many users is that the refreshed Nexus 7 will run Android 4.3 at release. With references to Android 4.3 appearing on benchmarks and server logs as well as at a tradeshow in Thailand, there’s little doubt that the updated OS is close to ready for user consumption. Given that Google has previously launched new hardware with new versions of Android, an updated Nexus 7 running Android 4.3 is a very real possibility.
