Users of ChromeOS devices will soon be able to access the media files stored on their Android powered phones or tablets soon, as Google has added MTP (or Media Transport Protocol) support to ChromeOS version 36. The addition of MTP will allow users to manage digital media (such as photos or videos) from their Chrome devices, just as Windows and Mac users can already do.
If you’re keen to try it out without waiting for the stable release, you can switch to the ChromeOS developer channel and enable limited MTP functionality by turning on the enable-filemanager-mtp tag by browsing to chrome://flags in your browser.
Adding this type of functionality is another huge step in making Chrome OS a viable alternative to Windows or Mac, and making it more attractive to users who are wary of the “cut down” nature of the OS. Plus, it only makes sense that two Google products should be able to talk to each other.
