xperia z3While some flagship smartphones have received their update to Android 5.0 Lollipop already, others — like Sony’s Xperia Z3 — have not. LG have already released their update for the G3, and Samsung and HTC’s plans are well advanced with versions starting to emerge for some of their recent devices, but as yet, Sony hasn’t quite reached that point.

It might not be far away though. Vodafone is well known for publishing schedules of software updates, both in testing and soon expected to be, and in their latest update, they advise that an Android 5.0 Lollipop update is expected for both the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 by the end of February. While it’s expected, it hasn’t actually been received yet, so that deadline could, sadly, change.

What does this mean for end users (like me)? If Sony get that update to Vodafone before the end of February, there’s a good chance that the update will be available to users come mid March. If this timeframe is right, users of unbranded handsets (e.g. from the Sony stores) may be able to access the update a little earlier, either via an over the air update, or via updated factory images (which you can get online to restore stuffed handsets).

The other update of note in there for the Australian audience is the HTC One (M8), with the Lollipop update confirmed received with testing in progress. Undoubtedly, the M8 will see the update before the Xperia Z3, but perhaps not by all that much.
