One of the big criticisms of Android Wear smartwatches is the lack of style many of them show. Many of us have been waiting and hoping for some of the big name watch makers to jump into to the ring and produce a top quality, stylish-looking smartwatch. Finally it appears that one, and an extremely notable one, Tag Heuer, is ready to leap into the twenty-first century and make a smartwatch.
In a bid to hopefully stop some of the marketshare loss to Apple with their upcoming watch Tag Heuer is set to announce a partnership with Intel to produce a digital version of their Carrera watch. The watch will apparently be identical to the original but will have a digital display instead and is set to be launched in our coming Spring. The Tag Heuer will no longer carry the “Swiss-made” label with the company saying:
We can’t produce the engine, the chips, the applications, the hardware — nobody can produce it in Switzerland. The hardware and the software will come from Silicon Valley. But the watch case, the dial, the design, the idea, the crown, that part of the watch will, of course, be Swiss.”
There is nothing set in stone that this smartwatch will run Android Wear but rumours have emerged via PocketLint that Tag Heuer has partnered with Google for their smartwatch. The move to using Android Wear as the OS on their watch would be the smart move, giving them the best shot at taking on Apple.
Pricing for any watch bearing the Tag Heuer name is obviously going to be out of range of most, but we’ll find out more about the Tag Heuer smartwatch, including the price when they announce it at Baselworld at around midnight AEDT.
What is the most you will pay for a dress smartwatch such as this? Can you see this being successful?
