Samsung has traditionally launched their Galaxy S flagship just prior to Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February/early March. If that pattern continues, we’re likely only a month away from finding out officially what this years Galaxy S handset has inside, but an entry on benchmarking site Antutu may have given us our first good look.
The appearance of what’s claimed to be the Galaxy S7, was advertised by Antutu themselves via their Weibo social networking account.
The device listed in Antutu has the model # SM-G930F, which SamMobile has previously listed as a Galaxy S7 model #, with the F being a designation for a particular market.
According to the Weibo posting, the Galaxy S7 will come with a 5.1″ QHD (1440×2560) resolution display, and will have 4GB of RAM under the hood to complement the 8890 Exynos processor. The phone tested on Antutu apparently had 64GB of storage (no mention of microSD card, though it is rumoured to have one) and a 12MP rear camera with 5MP front-facing camera.
While no other details such as battery, IR sensor etc. was listed, the phone will launch with Android 6.0.1 with Samsung’s Touchwiz overlay on top.
While there’s no link to the actual database entry at this stage, the hopes are that the Exynos 8890 processor will match up to the Snapdragon 820 which is apparently quite the performer. Samsung had a great year last year with the Exynos 7420 powering their Galaxy S and Note range last year, the phone performed well and the Exynos 8890 has the distinction of being an Octa-Core processor vs the Quad-Core of the Snapdragon 820 – though how this will turn out in real world tests remains to be seen.
Samsung has not yet announced any events for February, so the question of when we will see the Galaxy S7 is still unanswered. If Samsung decides to do something at MWC, Chris will be in Barcelona and will hopefully get some hands-on time with the phone.
