Sometimes leaks take the form of small drips that you’re not even sure are real, other times they can be a flood that simply can’t be ignored. Today’s Samsung leak of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge fall more into the second category. Thanks to notorious leakster @OnLeaks we have a veritable gallery of images of the Black, White and Gold variants of both models from Various angles. With only a day to wait for the big announcement at MWC 2016 it won;t be long to know all there is to know about Samsung’s latest flagships. Without further ado, here’s the eye candy.
Galaxy S7
At this stage the rumours seem to have settled on the S7 specs to include:
- 5.1″ SAMOLED display 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) @ 575 ppi
- Snapdragon 820 or Exynox 8890 processor, region dependant
- 4GB RAM
- Micro SD card
- 3000 mAh battery
- Wireless charging
- Finger Print Sensor
- 12MP rear camera with f1.7 aperture
- Micro USB and USB type C port, region dependant
- IP?? water and dust resistance
Galaxy S7 Edge
S7 Edge specs is rumoured to include:
- 5.7″ SAMOLED display 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) @ 515 ppi
- Snapdragon 820 or Exynox 8890 processor, region dependant
- 4GB RAM
- Micro SD card
- 3600 mAh battery
- Wireless charging
- Finger Print Sensor
- 12MP rear camera with f1.7 aperture
- Micro USB and USB type C port, region dependant
- IP?? water and dust resistance
Out of these rumored specs, there seems to be the most uncertainty around battery capacity and the USB port used. Certainly with recent Samsung teases it appears Samsung is definitely targeting battery life however, it seems unlikely that the S7 variant will get the rumoured 3600 mAh battery, which would be a full 1000mAh bump from last year. However the S7 getting a 3000 – 3200 mAh battery and the S7 Edge getting the 3600 mAh battery seems more likely.
The USB port will be an interesting trend to watch. Samsung were burnt when they were early adopters of the Micro USB 3.1 connector, so it would be understandable if they waiting another year to go with USB Type C, however, current cable quality issues aside, it very much seems if the rest of the industry is steaming towards Type C and It is just as likely they won’t want to be left behind. With the current rumour being that difference variants will have different connectors it’s not hard to predict a lot of ranting and flame wars in Samsung’s future whichever way they go.
Camera performance on the S6 variants was amongst the best in the 2015 smartphone line-up and Samsung has a high bar to reach with the S7s. It is interesting to note that they have opted to slightly reduce the MP rating from 16 to 12 MP in the S7 line-up. Assuming they have continued to use a high-quality sensor with OIS, this should improve the S7’s low light performance over the S6’s which will make many users very happy. The slight loss of resolution really won’t matter to the vast majority of users, especially if more of their photos “just work”.
Whichever way you look at it the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is shaping up to be a very strong competitor in the 2016 smartphone race. Love or hate some of Samsung’s ‘quirks’, such as capacitive buttons, TouchWiz or S-apps, there is little doubt that Samsung will deliver one of the best Smartphone in 2016. As they say, this is Samsung’s race to loose, and with strong competition from LG announcing on the same day they better make sure they have covered all of the bases.
