Fossil have made some decent Android Wear watches in recent times and have brought a selection of them here. Their offerings have all been stylish fashionable smartwatches but now they have announced a sportier version to go alongside their fashion watches.

The Fossil Q Control is Fossil’s first venture into the sporty smartwatch world, a category that is severely lacking in decent Android Wear 2.0 watches. It has a minimalistic design with a 45mm circular case that is 14mm thick. The watchband is a standard 20mm silicone strap and it easily interchangeable.

The bezel on the Q Control is touch sensitive offering a different way to navigate through the jungle of settings and apps that is Android Wear 2.0. Inside it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor and has 4GB of onboard storage. Fossil expect the user to get 24 hours of usage out of the battery which is good but not great in relation to other smartwatches out at the moment.

There is no standalone GPS but will instead use your phone’s GPS to track runs etc but does include a heart rate sensor that offers continuous monitoring. The built-in microphone allows full control of Google Assistant.

On the software side the Q Control runs Android Wear 2.0 and will include some exclusive Fossil watchfaces on the device.

At this stage it is unclear whether the watch will make it to Australia but we expect it to at some stage. It is priced at US$275 at all Fossil stores and their website this week so we expect it to be around the $450AU mark when it arrives here. We have reached out to Fossil Australia for more details regarding pricing and availability.

Have you seen, used or owned a Fossil smartwatch? Would you consider their new Q Control as a gym/sports smartwatch?
