If you’ve been on Twitter in the last few months, you’ll have seen increasingly more ‘Threads’ discussing various topics. Threads are a long series of tweets, often connected by numbers and also using Twitter’s “in reply to” tag so that you can easily navigate up to hundreds of tweets in a thread. Some of my favourite threads have been the those following breaking news events, but there are many other uses for threads, including rants, raves, and just gibberish.

Regardless, Twitter has now made it easier for people to create these threads and – combined with 240 character tweet limits – this means there’s now a way to pretty much put a blog post on Twitter without needing to host it anywhere else. I’m unsure if this is a good thing … yet.

Starting a thread requires use of the official app (for now) and it couldn’t be easier:

  1. Start with a Tweet
  2. Add tweets using the + button in the bottom right of the compose window
  3. Keep adding tweets until you’re done
  4. Hit the Tweet All button

Everything then goes out, and your Twitter thread is published. It does appear, though, that this will dump all your tweets onto Twitter at once, instead of pacing them out as would occur when threads are done by hand. For your followers, this may mean inundation with tweets all at once… so please be courteous!
