Google is getting out of the restaurant recommendation app business selling off the Zagat service they purchased in 2011 to restaurant discovery service The Infatuation.
Though released as a standalone app in 2012, Zagat was more broadly incorporated into Google services in Google+ and Google Maps.
The Zagat app on Google Play still lists itself as a US-only service but The Infatuation is very much an international recommendation service.
On their site, through a press release, Chris Stang, The Infatuation’s Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer said of the acquisition:
We’re thrilled by this opportunity to acquire such a pioneering and trusted restaurant guide as Zagat. Iconic brands don’t become available very often, and Zagat is about as iconic as it gets. It is the perfect complement to what we have been building at The Infatuation.
For fans of Zagat, The Infatuation has said that moving forward they will operate the two services as ‘two distinct brands’.
