With the new G7 about to launch, LG has announced the opening of a new ‘Software Upgrade Center’ in their home base of South Korea with the aim of speeding up Android updates to their handsets.
The upgrade centre is located in their new research and development campus in Magok-dong, western Seoul, and LG says the centre will focus on ‘developing and delivering regular OS updates for LG smartphones’ including delivering the Android Oreo update for the lG G6 later this month (starting in Korea). It’s not just LG phones in Korea that will benefit though, with LG saying that the centre will ‘enable LG to roll out OS updates faster in countries where LG smartphones are available to ensure that customers around the world receive the same level of quality service’.

Aligning after-sales support with customers’ needs is a top priority at LG. Stable and consistent upgrades will demonstrate to our customers that LG smartphones have long and reliable lifespans.
LG has been up and down with Android updates. They’ve been first to the ball on many updates including the Lollipop update for the G3, but their other handset updates have been very hit and miss. The G6 and V30+ are both still waiting on the update, though with the Korean G6 getting the update shortly, at least one of those problems will be solved.
If the opening of a dedicated software update centre helps get updates to phones faster, then we’re all for it – but the ball is in LG’s court, time to prove they can do what they say.
