Once notches started appearing it was only a matter of time before a company started upping the ante. Sharp has announced the Aquos R2 Compact and, it has two notches.
The Aquos R2 Compact has a 5.2″ 2280 x 1080 resolution 120Hz IGZO LCD display with a notch at either end. The top notch is a smaller teardrop style notch which contains the front facing 8MP camera, while the larger notch at the bottom folds around a fingerprint sensor. It’s a decent idea for fans of front mounted fingerprint sensors, without going to the extent of including an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Internally the phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage and is powered by a 2,500mAh battery. On the rear of the phone is a single lens 22.6MP camera sensor with Optical and Electrical Image Stabilisation. The phone also supports Dolby Atmos sound to go along with the HDR Dolby Vision support on that IGZO display.
Google announced previously that Android 9.0 (Pie) which the phone is running supports two notches natively, and they’re on the short edge which is also within the defined ‘rules’ for notches on Android devices.
Apart from that, there’s not much more information about the phone. It’s being released by Soft Bank and like most of those phones available through them they’re seldom sold outside of Japan.
