Only a few days ago we mentioned that Google were considering the purchase of Fitbit. That has come to fruition with an announcment on the Google Blog by their Senior VP of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh.

Over the years, Google has made progress with partners in this space with Wear OS and Google Fit, but we see an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market. Fitbit has been a true pioneer in the industry and has created engaging products, experiences and a vibrant community of users. By working closely with Fitbit’s team of experts, and bringing together the best AI, software and hardware, we can help spur innovation in wearables and build products to benefit even more people around the world.

This is a fascinating step for Google, the WearOS platform has been struggling for some time. Our team at Ausdroid have not been alone in calling for action before users abandon the platform in droves.

With Fitbit edging away from fitness tracking as their only market and towards Smartwatches, it stands to reason that they’d be looked at by Google given their history of success. Hopefully Google can learn a lot from Fitbit in the delivered customer experience and bring a Pixel Watch that we all want so badly.
