Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has announced its entry into Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) communications with the launch of HMD OffGrid, a cutting-edge device designed to bridge the gap between cellular and satellite networks. With 70% of the Earth’s landmass remaining outside mobile coverage, HMD OffGrid promises to revolutionise connectivity for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Australia will be among the first countries to access the device, available via Amazon next month for AU$329.00. It’s compact and weighs just 60g; the durable HMD OffGrid is tailored for portability, offering three-day battery life, MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability, and 24/7 emergency response.

HMD OffGrid leverages the L Band satellite radio spectrum, enabling Android and iOS users to connect to satellites in remote and challenging environments. Through the OffGrid app, users can send two-way messages, share live locations with up to five recipients, and utilise a “check-in” feature for quick updates to friends and family.

Jean-Francis Baril, Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of HMD, said,

“HMD OffGrid is a new, affordable, portable, and easy-to-use offering that’s both empowering and reliable – especially when it matters the most. Whether hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, HMD OffGrid ensures you’re never truly off the grid.”

The device includes Overwatch x Rescue, a premium SOS service provided by FocusPoint International, which offers multilingual emergency response coordination and fully funded search-and-rescue support.

Subscription plans are available to suit various needs and budgets:

  • HMD Unlimited Plan: A$24.99/month or A$239.99/year, offering unlimited messages, check-ins, and SOS services with an activation fee of AU$13.99. Optional live tracking for A$6.99/month.
  • HMD Freedom Plan: A$112.99/year with 350 messages, unlimited check-ins, and live tracking, including an activation fee of AU$27.99.

Set-up is streamlined, with users activating their plans via a QR code included with the device. The OffGrid app ensures seamless management of connectivity features.

Greg Pearson, CEO of FocusPoint International, emphasised the importance of safety, stating,

“Together with HMD, our hope is to expand exploration possibilities while prioritising safety for all. With proven experience and access to global search and rescue networks, we provide peace of mind for adventurers beyond mobile coverage.”

The HMD OffGrid marks a significant step in connecting people where traditional networks cannot reach, empowering individuals to explore while staying safe and connected.
