Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has confirmed the Australian launch of HMD OffGrid, its latest innovation in Non-Terrestrial Network communications; originally announced last month at CES.
OffGrid is designed to provide a seamless satellite connectivity solution, ensuring users can stay in touch even in areas without traditional mobile coverage. With 70% of the world’s landmass lacking mobile network access, OffGrid offers a vital communication lifeline for adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, and remote workers.
The device, which is now available on Amazon for Au$329.00, operates using the L Band satellite radio spectrum, allowing Android and iOS users to connect directly to satellites without relying on standard cellular networks. It features two-way messaging and live location tracking via the OffGrid app, along with a 24/7 emergency response service provided through Overwatch x Rescue.
It features a three-day battery life and MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability, the lightweight 60g design makes it a highly portable and reliable companion for those venturing beyond traditional network coverage.
Jean-Francis Baril, CEO of HMD, emphasised that OffGrid is an affordable, portable, and easy-to-use solution that ensures connectivity in critical situations. He highlighted the importance of staying connected even while exploring off-grid locations, stating,
“Whether hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, HMD OffGrid ensures you’re never truly out of reach.”
To accommodate different levels of adventure, HMD offers two subscription plans. The HMD Unlimited Plan, priced at AU$24.99 per month or AU$239.99 annually, provides unlimited messaging and check-ins, along with access to SOS services. Users can also opt for live tracking for an additional A$6.99 per month. Meanwhile, the HMD Freedom Plan, available for a one-time payment of AU$112.99 per year, includes 350 text messages, unlimited check-ins, and live tracking, with a one-time activation fee of AU$27.99.
Setting up the OffGrid device is straightforward, with a QR code included to assist with activation. The OffGrid app allows users to manage messaging, location sharing, and emergency services, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience.
Greg Pearson, CEO of FocusPoint International, highlighted the partnership with HMD as a step forward in expanding exploration possibilities while prioritizing safety.
“Together with Human Mobile Devices, we aim to provide peace of mind to those venturing beyond traditional mobile network coverage, offering direct access to a global search and rescue network,”
I’m actually pretty keen to check this out when I next go off on a remote deployment or hiking where mobile phones are little more than an expensive torch, MP3 player (assuming you’ve downloaded some tunes) or notepad.
